Many people ask me what the difference is between being a business-person and an entrepreneur. It is a simple question that I thought once had a complicated answer. But as I have relaxed into the freedom of being an entrepreneur I can now simply answer with a single phrase I have coined ‘bleasure’. It is what business people normally label as one of the seven deadly sins, mixing business with pleasure.


Most of us are conditioned to believe business and pleasure are two separate entities. Two different ends of the spectrum that will never, and should never, meet. Though what I have found in running my own business is that chasing projects that truly interest me and doing what I love will not only produce happiness, but the key ingredient to that, success. It is the perfect recipe to leading a productive and enjoyable work life.


Here are the five best tips to successfully mixing business with pleasure:


YOU Are Your Business

As an entrepreneur, people buy into you, your passions, your personality, and then in turn your products and services. It is being the transparent figure in your business, showing who you truly are to your customers, that allows you to feel comfortable mixing business with pleasure. Transparency is the crucial element; it will allow your authenticity to come through.


Develop A Strong Strategy

On the outside pairing business with pleasure may seem like a simple concept. Yet, putting ‘bleasure’ into practice does not always come with that simple reality; it is something that can only be achieved through consistent work and guidance. When a business or person decides they want to make this transition, making this plan into reality only comes with a thoughtfully developed strategy. Along the way, acquiring new skills should be a constant habit to ensure you are well equipped for what may lay ahead.


Expect The Unexpected

Going against the grain and mixing the normally two separate entities, business and pleasure, into one trajectory is bound to present you with some unconventional side effects as a result. When you are following the path not normally taken, things can change at any minute and the possibilities become endless, especially when your decisive control is not limited to climbing up the usual corporate ladder.


Each person that enters your life on this path can be an influential factor in your success. Every person has the opportunity to open up new avenues, so keeping an open-mind to what they have to offer at either end of the business-pleasure spectrum and having the ability to be flexible, changing your route at any given moment’s notice, is essential. Chasing down the limitless potential opportunities they will offer and running with them, is the difference between stagnancy and progress at both ends of the ‘bleasure’ spectrum.


Your Passion Is Your Profession

The saying ‘follow your passion’ is a commonly heard phrase, but passion, in reality, is not enough. There is a difference between enjoying a particular activity, and the potential of that activity as a business or career. A great business idea is nothing if you have no clue how to turn that idea from paper into reality. Fuelling a successful career that combines business and pleasure is differentiating between what your passion is, what your instinctive gifts are, what skills you currently attain, and what skills you will need to gain.


Balance Is Key

When mixing business and pleasure, it is essentially mixing logic and emotions or respectively, business and people. There is a fine line between all of those elements that can throw the balance off. Finding that equilibrium early on in the business will ensure that pleasure doesn’t outweigh business or vice versa.
